On The Real Side - 4th April 2003 The Gothenburg Saturday night soul session was easily one of the best positive, smiles-on-faces, up-for-it, arms-in-the-air, singing-their-hearts-out, dancing-their ass-off crowds I've ever experienced at a NS venue. Literally every track played, regardless of it's era, reputation, value, or from whichever DJ was greeted with the same amount of enthusiasm and 99% of the time a packed dancefloor too. Christian told me that he was particularly pleased with the fact that nearly all of the Swedish Northern Soulies had made the effort and had congregated on Gothenburg...the first time in a decade or so that all were there. The stories of folk travelling for 4 or 5 hours to get there were many, including two mini-buses from Stockholm, not to mention the folk coming over from Finland and Denmark! The Friday night Modern session was used as a meet up and a great chance for myself to renew friendships from my last trip to the city. Everyone made both Yann and myself more than welcome and the conversations soon became deep anorak sessions! We arrived at the Saturday night venue fairly early and dancers were out on the floor from the off. Yann and I deciding to have two double-deck sessions instead of two separate sets each, thus we would be sharing the final 45 minutes of the night. By 10.30 the place was really starting to fill up and the dancefloor was now well and truly rocking. I could but kick off with Edwin Starr as a tribute to the great man and there was no looking back from then on...or any spare space to dance in! I can't single out too many discs going down any better than others as they were all so well received, but the two which had the crowd cheering (yes, cheering) for Yann was the Constellations' "I don't know about you" and The Rotations' "I can't find her". For myself, like last year, I had sooooo many requests for Soul Inc's "My proposal" and once again when I played it the crowd almost exploded with excitement and yes arms were all in the air and they were singing their hearts out. Seldom have I seen such a reaction for a record spun at a Northern Soul venue. The final plays of the night were left to another Gothenburg favourite, Bobby Reed "The time is right for love" and then second time out for the Soul Inc which got it';s second standing ovation...and the two encores were Edwin Starr's "Scotts on swingers" and Jimmy Radcliffe's "Long after tonight..." being the final spin. The entire Swedish soul scene should cherish this venue and be proud of what they have in such a positive up for it crew of like minded party people who love their soul music. If only every soul club was like this. |
