What could be better than sun, sand, soul and shopping...OK, add drinking and eating too! So, off to the airport for all of these on the weekend of 12th/13th July '02 - flying down to Rimini on the North East coast of Italy. This was the first soul weekender for the town/venue - they already hold Mod weekenders there, and Adey Croasdell, Arthur Fenn, myself and a host of other DJs all descended down to the inaugral event. The venue was hip as were a lot of the punters, not to mention the sounds! A big thank you to our hosts, Nancy, Simone and Andrea, and a huge big thank you for our "personal translators", Soulful Cris and her better half Pierre!
I'll add more photos as and when they arrive, and you can visit the soul-combination society of Italy's web-site at -"Rimini Soul Weekender". |
The 1st Rimini Soul Weekender |
The Italian Job by Fat Man At The Go-Go.......innit?
Just back from Italy & 3 spent days in Rimini at the Right Combination Soul In The Sun Weekender. Organised by the highly prized Nancy Yahiro with the Friday as a sort of warm-up for the main Saturday event. The venue is probably the best I've ever been to for a NS do, built in the 70T's, light, clean, very 1960T's. Perfect. 2 large bars, with without doubt, the sexiest, most gorgeous girls working (& dancing) behind them (and what behinds they were too !) Their motto could have been "Short, white & tight" During the day the outside bar was a sort of NS cafe playing music, supping beer and records for sale (sold and bought some meself). Very professional sound system, loud & clear and luxury of all luxuries AIR CONDITIONING, yes, yes & thrice yes !!!!! A mixture of local heroes and imported DJ's (Ady Croasdell, Dave Flynn & Benji from Germany, etc.) provided a good mixture of classic, newbies and very early 70T's. There was a about a 90 minute session of dross, someone aptly called "only 3 known copies" usual screeching sound of a live cat being roasted over an open spit, but hey! "only three known copies" guys...I guess there's a London influence here! The real stars of the show were however the punters, some old farts from the UK but mostly Italians about + - 25 ears old. As most of you will already know Europe's NS scene stems from the Mod/Scooter scene with a smidgen of pseudo-skinheads. Being Italians of course it was done with absolute style, one bloke had tassel loafers, Bordeaux Levi Sta-Prest with regulation 1/3" turn-ups, royal blue Fred Perry with thin red braces, top dude. The dancing was extremely good, of course they have youth on their side, but nevertheless I saw some mean back-drops, spins and high kicks. This was possible because venue could hold about 300ish and the maximum was about 180 on the Saturday. One funny thing though, a bloke no older than 25 wearing a black Torch T shirt, he wasnt even born when I was going !!!!.All the women were absolutely beautiful, even the ugly Italian girls are gorgeous, its a med. thing I'm sure. Saw the magnificent Maria from KTF and the ever youthful Dave Flynn whom I sure has sold his soul to the devil in return for eternal youth & his hair is so silky soft too !! Also old KTF'er Steffano Oggiano did a spot. Thoroughly recommended with cheap Ryan air flights, hotels, fab food and Italian crumpet what more could you ask for. Worth going just to meet Maria, she's KTF's top female ;-) See you all next year, you know it makes sense.
