"The Uptight All-nighters", Frankfurt 2001/2002
Always a pleasure to DJ for Gerhard and the boys over there in Frankfurt, and below are plenty of photos from the Spring events for 2001 and 2002. The Saturday night club attracts up to 600 people across two rooms covering 40 years of soul. There's also normally a smaller meet up session on the Friday night beforehand, as everyone converges on Frankfurt from all over Germany, France, Italy, UK etc. The music policy is play what you like and the enthusiastic crowd usually keep the floor packed until the end of the nights. Here's the full length Frankfurt report, from Franz
First of all, i think it was a fantastic weekend, meeting all the usual suspects...plus i must admit i enjoeyed it much more than last time.
Arrived at offenbach just to wait for marc and max to arrive all the way from berlin, then off to to the jazil in frankfurt, a bar, quite posh looking, but with a nice dancefloor in the basement, where most of the above mentioned suspects already had gathered to talk about everything else than soul-music, enjoying the odd soul tune spun in the background...a pity the place had some quite strict regulations regarding the volume to play records at, so it was more like a cosy get-together in a livingroom listening to some sounds and have a chat than a real soulnite, but i thought that was quite appropriate as a warm up for sat., so the social aspect was well catered for, esp. much better than last time. when we entered, miles and paul were busy at the decks, great to meet the jolly two again (miles, you still owe me a rum - MOOKS! :-) Later own, mr flynn and mr forrest worked the decks, playing us some of the fine stuff they had brought for the weekend, check the playlists! great to meet lionel (2nd time) and have a chat, good to see there's able to talk about soulmusic and other things as well. so the night felt like a good warm up for sat, and left us hungry and screaming for more, played out LOUD at a real venue! the night ended having a last beer at gerhards house with marc, mani, miles, paul, gerhard and lionel, and i'm still very thankful that miles and paul helped to keep my temper under control and i'm still not sure how i found my way to the place i stayed over the weekend:-)
saturday first saw the traditional meal at the local offenbach greek restaurant, and this time even dog bags were ordered much to the embarresment of some people not used to this, no names mentioned ;-)
even the italians were arrived by now (they got stuck in heavy snowfalls in the swiss alps so couldn't make it friday night), so all the djs for the night (i lost count of them :-) were finally there. after that over to gerhard house, listening o some sounds and getting ready for the nighter, then the taxi fleet ( i think we needed six in the end?) set off for frankfurt east. arriving at the venue, andreas knauf and max were doing their spot,
great tracks played to an almost empty floor, as the place filled up a bit slower than usual, and it didn't fill up ( or shall i say pack) to the usual degree what i appreciated a lot, as it was possible to find ome's own quaremeter of holy dancefloor ground whenever you wanted to that night. to be honest, i don't exactly remeber the order in which the djs appeared, all of them did a great job in my opinion (again, check the playlists!), highlights for me were david, marc and the last spot done as a joint venture by marc and gerhard, but the others weren't a tad worse, heaven + and defo worth the trip to frankfurt! what made me especially happy was that later that night the djs started to announce records over the microphone which is still
absolutely uncommon over here. i always promoted the use of microphones, as it lifts the whole thing to another 'cultural level' if i may say so, at least in my opinion. the 'spoken word highlights for me were david's 'COME ON FRANKFURT!!!', as well as joerg brenners trip from detroit to chicago to detroit to detroit back to chicago back to detroit :-) on the music side ( i thought i'd get around this, but...;-) the definte highlights for me personally were the oxford nights played by david out of his cute liccle box, which i remebered as quite a good sound, but this time it was like being slapped and the word CHHHHOOOOOOOOOONE springing to my mind, + the flipside to a well known detroit track on a colourful sprinkled detroit label which isn't exactly too easy to come by, thanks marc! but typing this down, it appears to me to be a bit unjustifiable to single out two tracks, but they did it for me, that's all. ok, that's it for now, a big thanks to those involved to make it a great soulful weekend, esp. gerhard + heike as the hosts and promoters, and the djs! for those who've never been, frankfurts defo worth the voyage, no matter where you are!
